In 1967, Fairfield's Central Park was recovering from the loss of giant elm trees to the Dutch Elm disease and there was little landscaping. The bandstand shown was built in 1907 and did not sit in the center of the park -- in the center in 1907 was a 185-foot light tower that had been built in 1882 to light up the square, and it was dismantled in 1910. The current bandstand was built in 1969. Businesses on the north side of the square in 1967, from west to east, were the Coast-to-Coast Store, WARNER Shoe Store, BROWN's Shoe Fit Co., GIMBEL's Jewelry, PATTON's Sewing Center, SHORT's Shoe Repair (in the narrow store front), Broadway Bakery, Spurgeon's Department Store, Roxy's Ready-To-Wear, Donald JENSON Optometry, GAMBLE's, Ande's Candies, and Larry's Barber Shop. Below the barber shop was Don FUQUA's Radio & Television Hospital, and sitting on the corner was the Chester RICE Corn Cabin.
