TOP: In the middle of a cross-country road trip in 1977, Peter Apanel of Portland, Ore., stumbled upon the Bates Motel outside of Fairfield. Being an Alfred Hitchcock fan, Apanel decided to stop in and talk to the woman at the front desk, who gave him a postcard of the motel, pictured. Owned by Orland and Marie BATES, the Bates Motel burned down in 1979. Based on what Apanel recently found browsing the Internet, he concluded the woman who gave him the postcard in 1977 must have been Suzan KESSEL, current Fairfield resident and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. BATES. BOTTOM: Several years later, in 1984, Apanel attended a book signing in Pasadena, Calif., featuring "Psycho" star Janet Leigh. She signed the back of his postcard, "To Peter - This looks a little better than the other one."
