LEWIS H. FINNEY was a Private, Captain Peter Pinney's Company, 27th Regt. Baltimore (Maryland) Militia, War of 1812; marshaled into service at the commencement of the Blockade of the City of Baltimore; was at and in the Battle of North Point, near Fort McHenry at Baltimore, Md., in which the British General Ross was killed. He received a certificate of discharge, by Genl. Winfield Scott, & kept it in his possession until sometime in the year 1844 when he gave it to the Hon. William J. Brown, Member of Congress from Indiana, who informed affiant there was a strong prospect of obtaining reward from the General Government for him. He received Military Bounty Land Warrant No. 2456 for 40 Acres under the Act. of 1850, which he legally disposed of. Afterward another warrant for 120 Acres.

LEWIS H. FINNEY was born 15th Novr. 1794 (?) in Accomack County, Virginia; he was a cabinet maker; at time of enlistment he was about 18 yrs. of age; color of eyes, light; hair, light; complexion, light; height, 5 ft. 5 in. He was married to Christianna HURST on 10th April 1818, in Dorchester County, Maryland, by Rev. George Ward, Minister of the Gospel; neither were ever previously or subsequently married. After his discharge from the army, he lived in Baltimore, Md., then in Dorchester Co., Md., then in Marion Co., Ind., till about 1846, then in Jefferson Co., Iowa....

One paper dated 28 Oct. 1850, Jefferson Co., Iowa, was signed before Jas. Thompson, J.P.; another dated 30 April 1855, before A. H. Brown, J.P., witnessed by William L. Hamilton and William D. Stephens; Ro. F. Ratcliff, Clerk of Dist. Court, Jefferson County, Iowa. 14 Jun 1878 M. S. Crawford, Clerk of District Court, certifies that E. H. Finney presented the Declaration of Christianna FINNEY as widow of Lewis H. FINNEY; wit. Robert Black, J.P.; John Winsell, William Young.

"W. W. Young, aged 74 years, residing near Libertyville, Jefferson Co., Iowa, and John Winsell, residing near same place.... have known the said Christianna FINNEY for 30 years; and they further say that they are able to identify her as the person who was the wife of the identical Lewis H. FINNEY.... From our personal acquaintance with the said Lewis H. FINNEY & having heard him & others say he was in the War of 1812." .... Robert Black, Justice of the Peace.
