Out of the Past in Pictures

A May 1927 New York Times clipping has special significance to Fairfield resident Ray DAKE when Mother's Day rolls around. His mother, Pauline TREGO, was featured in the newspaper after she rode 7,821 miles on horseback, 11 miles each day through good weather and bad, to obtain her high school education in Shellsburg. Other than missing nine days for the measles her freshman year, she traveled to school by horseback every day. TREGO and her pony, Buddy, were close -- so close, in fact, that the pony would only allow TREGO to ride him. DAKE, who remebers Buddy as an older pony, says, "My mother had a soft spot in her heart for him."
