Deputy assessor killed in motorcycle accident Thursday
A motorcycle accident Thursday evening north of Keosauqua resulted in the death of a Fairfield woman and injury to her husband.
According to the Iowa State Patrol District 13 Office in Mount Pleasant, Colleen D. SMITH, age 50, of Fairfield, died, and her husband Harold J. SMITH, age 53, was injured.
According to the state patrol's minimal crash report, Harold SMITH was riding a 2006 Harley Davidson (sic) motorcycle southbound on Highway 1, with his wife as a passenger, following another southbound vehicle.
At about 5:38 p.m., 2 miles north of Keosauqua, a deer entered the roadway and struck the front vehicle. SMITH braked in an attempt to avoid a collision with the vehicle. The motorcycle slid, ending up in the west ditch. The couple was thrown from the motorcycle, resulting in injuries to both driver and passenger. Both were transported by Van Buren County Ambulance to Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua.
Colleen SMITH was transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where she died.
Colleen SMITH was deputy assessor in the Jefferson County Assessors Office. Funeral arrangements are pending at Behner Funeral Home.
According to the Van Buren County Hospital administration office, it is against the law for the hospital to give out any information about patients.
