PARSONS History Revealed
PARSONS College alumni and friends will celebrate the dedication of PARSONS College Alumni Hall Saturday at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center.
General Lewis Baldwin PARSONS, executor and founder of PARSONS College, was not well known to the public; however, his organization of transportation for the Army of the Mississippi contributed to General GRANT's success at Vicksburg, among other battlefields.
The Carnegie Historical Museum has in its possession archive copies of letters from Secretary of War Edwin M. STANTON, Gen. William T. SHERMAN, Gen. Ulysses S. GRANT and Abraham LINCOLN, all lauding PARSONS and his execution of transporting supplies to stage victories on the battlefield.
In 1875, the PARSONS estate, General PARSONS, Charles PARSONS and the community of Fairfield combined their efforts in creating PARSONS College.
The citizens of Fairfield raised $27,000 in two weeks. The amount was especially impressive due to the fact that it was raised during the depression of 1873.
