"Fairfield Ledger Weekly", June 3, 1869

Decoration Day.--- Sunday was observed as Decoration Day by the soldiers of this place. The morning was wet and dreary, but the clouds dispersed about 11 o’clock and the sun shone beautiful and warm. A large concourse of people assembled on the North side of the Park, and after the soldiers had formed in line, marched to the grave yard, preceded by the brass band playing a funeral dirge. Arrived at the grave yard, a hollow square was formed and appropriate exercises were performed. Rev. A. AXLINE led in prayer, Revs. SHIPPEN, LIVERMORE, and AXLINE, and Hon. M. A. McCOID, made appropriate addresses. The procession then marched into the grave yard and strewed flowers on the graves of all the soldiers.--- We have been furnished with their names:

Lieut. S. B. WOODS, Co. E, 2nd Iowa Infantry.
Wm. LEITH, “ “ “ “
John LOCKE, “ “ “ “
James WORKMAN, “ “ “ “
Theodore BOGGS, “ “ “ “
Capt. Mathew CLARK, “ H, 30th “ “

J. S .HUFFMAN, “ I, 45th “ “
Wm. H. HILL, “ A, 15th “ “
Lt. G. B. KIRKPATRICK, “ B, 4th “ “
Wm. A. McCUNE, 1st Iowa Battery.
A. MORRISON, Co. I, 17th “ Infantry.
W. B. McCOID, “ B, 8th “ Cavalry.
George STEELE, “ M, 4th “ “
Wm. T. HENDRICKS, “ H, 5th “ Infantry.
Robert D. POPE, a soldier of the Mexican War.
Joseph JUNKIN, a soldier of the War of 1812.
John SHEWARD, “ “ “
W. A HENDRICKS, “ “ “

The crowd, which had swelled to about 500, was then marched out of the grave yard, and again formed in line, when Rev. C. DARBY pronounced the benediction. The people then dispersed to their homes, feeling satisfied that they had performed a sad but pleasing duty in an appropriate manner.--- May the day ever be observed, and may the ceremonies be more solemn and impressive with each recurring anniversary.
