Mrs. BATES remembers Salina when it was a thriving town. She recalls there were three general store owners, Joe SCHILLERSTROM, Solomon CLARK and Lem and Frank NELSON. The NELSON brothers' father cobbled shoes in the back of their store. There were three churches, Methodist, Lutheran and Presbyterian. George LUELLEN had a funeral parlor, Ross LONG was postmaster and the town also boasted a co-operative creamery, three blacksmith shops, a school, and the offices of Dr. LESHER and Dr. MORROW....

MRS BATES TO BE 100. Mrs. Jerry BATES..... The dust hadn't much more than settled from the Civil War when Wina ANDERSON was born on a farm east of Salina which her father, J. P. ANDERSON had purchased from the government. He had come to Iowa from Sweden, and the farm was on land which had previously been Indian territory. It is still in possession of the ANDERSON family, although she is the last of three brothers and four sisters. In her youth, Wina helped her father clear the land, and worked in the fields. She was frequently known to pick 60 bushels of corn in a day....

She is the mother of three children and Clarence is the only one surviving. There are three grandchildren: Mrs. Bernice HIRD of Ottumwa, Mrs. Bert HELFENSTINE, Oakridge, Oregon, and Clarence BATES of Davenport; 10 greatgrandchildren in California, Oregon, Ottumwa and Birmingham, and four greatgreatgrandchildren in California and Oregon, to make a five-generation family.....
