Sept. 5, 1906.Reunion of Co. M, 4th Iowa Cavalry, held at Mr. Gus SMITHBURG’s home three miles north of the village of Lockridge, Aug. 31, 1906. Mr. SMITHBURG is one of the substantial farmers of Jefferson County. His large house, beautiful lawn and shrubbery, orchards of apples and peaches breaking beneath their burden of fruit, and the three or four large barns capable of sheltering the scores of horses, made the place princely in accommodations. The view extends miles up and down Brush Creek, being of forest mingled with fields and scores of farmsteads in sight..... The only cause of complaint that could be imagined was that it being a time of peace, the 800 or more beautiful fowls about the place crowed or cackled most temptingly..... As Mr. SMITHBURG had foraged through Dixie, he could not forget the habits of these old-timers..... Forty odd years ago Co. M and some old infantrymen would not have endured it very long. However, the particular annoyance was soon forgotten at sight of the tables with their burdens of chickens, fried and roasted.....
