Plaque on boulder:
"In Memoriam. In 1845, Rev. Peter CASSEL led the first company of Swedish emigrants to establish a permanent colony west of the Mississippi river.
Born in Sweden Oct. 13, 1790, Died March 4, 1857.
Catherine (ANDERSON), his wife, Born Sept. 3, 1807, Died May 3, 1877.With others he soon planned the organization of a church, which took place on the Day of Pentecost in 1850. It was the third Swedish Methodist church in the United States, and he became the first resident pastor.
Erected by his descendants and dedicated on the ninetieth anniversary of the New Sweden church.”See: Fairfield Ledger, June 17, 1940.
