"Fairfield Ledger", Feb. 22, 1889, Pg. 3, Col. 5

FOUR CORNERS.... In 1840 twelve families of Mormons settled here who, for religious purposes, often accompanied their leader, Wash CONYERE, to Nauvoo, Ill.. Three years later a pestilence raged; many died and were buried near the present site of the Swedish Lutheran Church. Rude tombstones marking the last resting place of their departed comrades were erected by the remaining brethren, who, in 1845-6, took up their journey across the then Great American Desert to Salt Lake City. One of the sandstones now supports a gate and pieces of others are found lying about.
