"Fairfield Ledger", July 7, 1886, Pg. 3, Col. 4

FATALLY SHOT. A letter received in this city Monday announces the probably fatal shooting of Capt. J. C. SNODGRASS, a former resident of this city and a gentleman highly respected, at Winterset, this state, Saturday. Mr. SNODGRASS was acting as city marshal and was shot by a drunken rough whom he was attempting to arrest. Two balls struck him, one in the arm, the other in the abdomen, and Mr. DOANE, a former army comrade, writes that the attending physician pronounced the wounds as likely to result fatally. Capt. SNODGRASS lived in this county for many years. He was a soldier in Company I, 17th Iowa Infantry, enlisting as a private and coming out a captain. He is a brother-in-law of B.F. and James D. CRAIL....
