COCHRAN Family - residents for a century

COCHRAN, LOVE, LYNCH, ALLENDER, CHANDLER

COCHRAN FAMILY HAS RESIDED IN JEFFERSON COUNTY FOR CENTURY AND THROUGH FOUR GENERATIONS... John and Ann LOVE COCHRAN, and their children, came to Round Prairie Township in 1841. John COCHRAN was born in County Donegal, Ireland, April 2, 1803, of Scotch (sic) and English parentage. Emigrated to the United States in May, 1826, and settled in Jefferson County, Ohio; in 1841 moved to Jefferson County, Iowa, and remained here until his death in 1876. His obituary reads as follows: "Cheerfulness was a characteristic of Mr. COCHRAN, and his always pleasant disposition made his company agreeable and pleasant. He held several community offices and served as a member of the Board of Supervisors in 1867 and 1868." He died near Glasgow, Iowa, on January 17, 1876. John and Ann LOVE COCHRAN were the parents of four children, Isabel, Jane, James and George. (See Vol. 3, Jefferson County Records, for tombstones of John and Ann LOVE COCHRAN at Glasgow.)

George, who came with his father John to Jefferson County, Iowa, was born in Jefferson County, Ohio, Jan. 7, 1827. In 1841, at the age of 14, he moved to a farm in Round Prairie Township, and remained there until 1875, when he moved to a farm in Buchanan township. Married Elizabeth J. LYNCH in 1849. Six children: Mrs. James ALLENDER, Mrs. Warren E. CHANDLER, Mary Elizabeth, Alice B., Charles C. and Ulysses S.. Two are still living -- Mrs. CHANDLER and U. S. COCHRAN... He was a member of the M.E. Church for almost half a century and lived strictly according to its teachings as he saw them.
