"Fairfield Tribune", Wed., June 19, 1912, Pg. 1, Col. 1

The Fourth of July, 1854, was celebrated at Fairfield. A large number of toasts were proposed.... D. SHEWARD, whose press was destroyed in 1864 by the soldiers for its denunciation of the war, proposed: "The Flag of our Union -- may the number of its stars increase and its stripes remain unfurled until this whole continent shall be gathered under its ample folds."
