COL. JAMES THOMPSON, deceased, one of the pioneer settlers of Jefferson County, for many years a prominent citizen of Fairfield. Born 9 Apr. 1793, in Plattsburg, N.Y., and in his youth removed with his father's family to Washington Co., Pa., where he lived until his 17th year, when he settled in Harrison Co., Ohio. In Sept., 1824, m. Marry HORKEN, at New Rumley. Soon after marriage removed to Carrollton, Ohio.... to Fairfield, Iowa, in 1844.

Seven children, lost one in childhood; four still living, two sons in Montana and two daughters, Mrs. George D. TEMPLE of Burlington and Mrs. John R. SHAFFER of Des Moines.... In Ohio he was Justice of the Peace for several years and for two terms represented Carroll County in the State Senate; afterward came within one vote of securing the nomination for Congress. For a number of years he had command of a Militia company and thereby won the title of Colonel....
