"Fairfield Ledger", Oct. 27, 1880, Pg. 3, Col. 5

The man Phineas WILCOX, "The Mendota carpenter", who is making such rousing republican campaign speeches in Illinois and other states east, was formerly a resident of Fairfield. His rise to notoriety has been sudden, but people say, who have heard him, that he makes some of the best stump speeches of the day and excites great enthusiasm. His last visit here was on Decoration Day, when he made a short address which was pronounced a good thing by those who heard it.
