SMITHS LOSE HOME BY FIRE

Fire which started from the flue in an upstairs room Friday morning, completely destroyed the farm house, about one mile north of the overhead bridge, occupied by the Ralph Smith family, and known as the Craff place.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith had gone to the barn to do the morning chores, and at about 8 o'clock they heard the screams of their children. He had crawled to an upstairs window and attracted the attention of the parents. Hurrying to the house, Mr. Smith just had time to rescue the other two children. One of them still slept, but the other had awakened.

The family escaped with only the clothing they were wearing. All other household possessions were destroyed.

Mr. Smith was quite seriously burned on the right hand when he returned to the house and attempted to save a new washing machine, but failed in his attempt.

The house was insured, but the contents were not.

The family is now at the Bice home where they will be cared for temporarily.

A call for clothing and other necessary articles was sent out, and the community is responding. Women of the Four Corners neighborhood expect to meet and sew for the family Saturday.
