HOMES OF FAIRFIELD. Don McGIFFIN, 1002 E. Burlington. Built in 1930 by the owner on spacious grounds. Mr. McGIFFIN is the grandson of Thomas McGIFFIN who came here in the early '40s with the group which arrived between '43 and '48 and contained Thos. McGIFFIN, James M. SLAGLE, James E. ECKERT, C. W. SLAGLE, Geo. ACHESON, R. H. HUFFORD, J. A. McKEMEY and others. The writer remembers when, in Sept., 1878, James G. BLAINE on his way to Oskaloosa to make a speech, had his train stop here a few minutes to see the Pennsylvania boys from Washington County, several of whom he said had left W. and J. College as he entered. After a few remarks he wanted to see his old friends and said "Where's Tom McGIFFIN?" Then inquired of Chris SLAGLE, George ACHESON and others. On Mr. McGIFFIN's maternal side, Wm. W. JUNKIN is his grandfather. He was the newspaper dean of his day.
