"Fairfield Ledger", Tues., Mar. 8, 1927, Pg. 1, Col. 6

FAIRFIELD'S OLDEST TREE IS BEING CUT DOWN TODAY. What is commonly reported to be the oldest and largest maple tree in the city, is being cut down today.... Had to be removed to make room for a new modern residence. The tree stands on the lot on East Broadway formerly occupied by the Episcopal Church. The first building on this lot was the U.S. Land Office, where the land sales for all the public land in southeast Iowa were held. (Fred KANN's home, 204 East Broadway.)
