'IN DAYS GONE BY" -- FIFTY YEARS AGO (1878) -- Among the few old buildings yet remaining in Fairfield none has a more interesting history than the small brick building north of the square recently torn down by R. McELHINNY who owns the property. For several years it has been almost deserted and unoccupied.
The building was erected in 1843 by Thos. H. GRAY, at a time too when brick buildings were somewhat rare in this country. Fairfield was then a small settlement and the government owned the land to a few miles west of the city. Col. SHUFFLETON and Mr. GRAY formed a law partnership and had their office in this building. After occupying it for several years, owing to a change in the firm, it became vacant. In November, 1849, Vol. 1, No. 1, of the "Fairfield Ledger" was printed and issued from this building by Orlando McCRANEY.
