"Fairfield Ledger", Dec. 19, 1932, Pg. 4

HOMES OF FAIRFIELD. 50 North Main. ALSTON Estate. Built by William ALSTON on site of frame 36 feet long by 18 feet wide, fronting street. At alley side a passageway went back to the rear frame longer but same width, which was the billiard room and the front sold liquor. "Whiskey STEWART" ran the place for years. Robert LOCKE, a 45th (?) Iowa soldier (Co. E, 2nd I.V.I.) bought the place, served meals and sold liquor, but in 1877 a revival in progress at one of the churches induced him to go out of the line and a great time was had the day he with volunteer assistance poured his liquors into the street.
