"Fairfield Tribune", Apr. 7, 1909, Pg. 2, Col. 4

Nine of the pioneer settlers of the county have died since the first day of last September. During the Old Settlers Meeting in the city last fall, William LOUDEN, himself a resident of the county since 1842, compiled and had published a list of the settlers of Territorial Days, those coming to the county prior to or in the year 1846 and still resident here. There are about 200 in this list. Since the list was printed, the following have died -- James MENEELY/McNEELY being the latest to pass away: David S. SULLIVAN, 1837; William D. CLAPP, 1842; Mrs. Geo. A. POLLOCK, 1842; Mrs. J. A. McKEMEY; Mrs. Amanda McDONALD; Mrs. Julia STRONG, 1843; Jas. MENEELY/McNEELY, 1844; Dr. J. W. HAYDEN; Mrs. Artimisia MENEELY/McNEELY, 1846. The death rate among these pioneers has been very heavy considering the short time since the list was completed. It has amounted to more than one a month.
