"Fairfield Ledger", Nov. 9, 1904, Pg. 9, Col. 4

Edward James SMITH is 66 years old and he claims the distinction of being the oldest soldier in the War of the Rebellion who was born in the state. If anyone can date back farther he will be pleased to hear from him. He was regimental color bearer and member of Co. C, Eighth Iowa Cavalry, enlisted at Libertyville and served three years, being in all the battles in which his regiment participated. He came home in poor health, went to Idaho in 1869, and is still a resident of that state -- Caldwell, Idaho. His wife died in 1903.
