HIEL D. MILLER, born Morgan Co., Ohio, 8 Dec. 1839, son of William and Harriet (CHEADLE) MILLER, natives of Ohio, the father of German and the mother of American descent, the maternal grandparents having come from Massachusetts. Mr. MILLER engaged in farming during the entire period of his active life.

In 1847 William MILLER with his wife and family started westward, crossing the prairies to Iowa... He settled in Jefferson County, which at that period yet contained large tracts of government land.... He purchased 320 acres of unimproved, wild land in Des Moines Township, where he removed his family after erecting the necessary buildings. Here he began the hard and wearisome life of the pioneer, as had his grandfather who emigrated from England and located in Ohio more than half a century previously....

Five children: Newell, who died when he was six years of age; and Winchester and Dean, both of whom are deceased; Hiel D., and Mary Ann, the widow of James SPILLMAN, of Kansas.

The first seven years of his life Hiel D. MILLER spent in his native state... On the 25th of June 1874 married Miss Elizabeth MOYER, daughter of William and Mary (CORBIN) MOYER, natives of Penn. but of German extraction. They came to Iowa before the Civil War, locating in Fairfield, where the father worked at the cabinet-maker's trade until he went to the front in the service of his country. There he died during the siege of Vicksburg, while the mother passed away in Fairfield, where Mrs. MILLER was born. Six children were born of the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Hiel D. MILLER:

1-Mabel, born 31 May 1875; married Harry OVERTURFF and has one child, Hiel D., named for his grandfather. The OVERTURFFs still live on the old homestead with Mr. MILLER.

2-Arthur, born 23 Aug. 1876, living on a claim in Idaho; married Miss Jennie PETZINGER, dau. of George PETZINGER of Des Moines Twp.; they have four children: Helen, Mary, Alice and George.

3-Ethel, born 25 Jan. 1879; died May 12, 1900.

4-Clyde, born Oct. 2, 1880; engaged in farming on the place adjoining his father.

5-Beulah, born 5 Dec. 1881; died March 23, 1885.

6-Fred, born 25 Nov. 1887; still at home with his father.
