LYDIA KNESS, widow, ae 81 y. 4 m. 1 d.
Died Jan. 9, 1882, 2:10 P.M.

GEORGE KNESS, Private, Ohio, Militia, War of 1812, served under Captains Moses Dawson, Thomas Morgan and George Wolfe; Gen. Wm. H. Harrison. Volunteered for four tours; was honorably discharged at Frankston, Ohio, 1st time, at Urbana, O., 2nd time; at Franketon, O., 3rd time, at Chillicothe, Ohio, the 4th time. “Received four different certificates of discharge for the four different terms of service in said war, which he (affiant) regarding of no use to him, destroyed them.” (Statement made 14 Nov. 1850 in Jefferson county, Iowa, for the purpose of obtaining Bounty Land.) His name appears as George NEASE, private of Captain George Wolfe’s Company of Ohio Militia.

1 June 1878. Claim of widow for Service Pension. Her maiden name was Lydia STRAWSER; neither he nor she were ever married to another. She was married to George KNESS at the town of Adelphia, Ross County, Ohio, 9 Aug. 1815, by George Wills, J. P. Description of her husband at the time of enlistment: Age 20 years; occupation, miller; born in Penn.; height 5 ft. 6 in.; light hair; eyes brown; light complexion. He volunteered at Adelphia, Ohio, spring of 1814. After his discharge they lived in Ross County, Ohio, for 22 years; in Sangamon County, Ill. For 5 years; in Jefferson County, Iowa....Land warrant(s) 35,168 – 22,383.

From “History of Ross & Highland Counties, Ohio,” Henry STRAUSER, Peter STRAUSER and Jacob STRAUSER, were early settlers in Colerain Township, Ross County, Ohio.

[Ed. note: George KNESS is buried in Abingdon Cemetery. His wife Lydia and their son George are buried on the family farm. Daughters Lydia and Arlinda are also buried in Abingdon Cemetery.]
