John R. McElderry, auditor of Jefferson County, born Carrollton, Carroll Co., Ohio Oct 16 1840, descendant of one of the Revolutionary heroes. His great-grandfather who was a soldier in the Colonial army during the struggle for Independence, died at Valley Forge. The grandfather, Jonathan McElderry, was of Scotch-Irish descent. Parents of our subject were John & Margaret (Hanna) McElderry, the former native of Washington Co., Penn., and a farmer; the latter born in Jefferson Co., Ohio as was her father, Robert Hanna who was of German lineage.....In 1857 our subject accompanied his parents on their emigration to Jefferson County, Iowa, the family locating on a farm in Fairfield township.
