Page 5 column 7BIOGRAPHY OF ADAM PECK, born in March 1867 in Walnut Township, Jefferson County, Iowa, in a log house. At the age of three months his parents moved into Penn township, School District No. 8, better known as Hawkeye School District. MR. PECK had four sisters and two brothers and all attended this school. In 1894 MR. PECK was married to MISS MARY PACHA….nine children, eight boys and one girl. One boy died in infancy and the seven boys who attended Hawkeye School were EDWARD, LAWRENCE, WALTER, CLEMENT, RAYMOND, AMBROSE, MAXEMUS, and one girl, IRENE. MAXEMUS was the first pupil to finish the eighth grade in this school. Other pupils to finish the eighth grade here were IRENE PECK, HERMAN DRISH, HERMAN ROGAL, BARBARA DRZYCIMSKI, WALTER SOBOSKI and EMELIA ROGAL. MR. PECK has three grandchildren attending this school at the present time. They are LEONARD, MARY and RITA PECK, children of EDWARD PECK.
The old Hawkeye school was located one half mile northwest of the present location. Although this school house was not painted, it was well built, well plastered and was a warm building. As this school was not in the center of the district, it was sold and a new school house built on the present location. This was fifty years ago. This school is not plastered but the past year a new floor and a new cloak room have been added, as well as a new coat of white paint. The largest attendance at this school was 56 pupils ranging in age from 7 to 20 years. This is quite a contrast to the present attendance, which is 9 pupils ranging in ages from 5 to 13 years. In 1909 MR. PECK was elected Director of this school. He was re-elected for five successive years. In 1906 he was elected Director and this position he held for six years. The present Director is MR. JOHN MELINSKI and the teacher MISS MARY ELIZABETH QUINN. MARY AGNES PECK Age 9 years, Grade 5 Hawkeye School.
