Sec. E, Page 5, col. 4.PIONEER COUPLE. (Picture of Mr. and Mrs. Christian Turner) Both Mr. and Mrs. Christian Turner were originally natives of Sweden. Mr. Turner was born in 1832, and came to the United States in 1855. Mrs. Turner was born Christina Louise Carlborg in 1839, and came to the United States after Mr. Turner. Mr. and Mrs. Turner were married in Fairfield, February 3, 1859, Rev. Andrew Axline performing the ceremony.
Mr. Turner was a merchant tailor by trade. After working for Mr. Winner, a merchant, for several years, he went into business for himself. In 1862 he enlisted in the Union army, Co. H, 30 Iowa Infantry. Upon return from the war, he again engaged in the mercantile business and in 1872 erected a building where Pierson & Pierson are now located. He resided at 202 East Briggs Street.
Mr. and Mrs. Christian Turner were the parents of thirteen children. At the time of their fiftieth wedding anniversary, in 1909, ten of their children were still living, and they had 25 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. In an account of this golden wedding anniversary in this paper, the following appeared: “Wednesday, after a continuous life of fifty years in Fairfield surrounded by their children and relatives, they celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary.....” Mr. Turner passed away in 1918 and Mrs. Turner died in 1927.
