Sec. D Page 4DISTINGUISHED BARRISTERS IN THE COUNTY’S HISTORY…by ARTHUR G. JORDAN. “…..On motion of CYRUS OLNEY, and upon his presentation of a duly authenticated license to practice as an attorney at law in the State of New York, SAMUEL SHUFFLETON was formally admitted to practice law at the Iowa Bar. Thereby, SAMUEL SHUFFLETON, according to the records, appears to have been the first lawyer residing in Fairfield to have been admitted to the Bar….It is a fact that the aforesaid SAMUEL SHUFFLETON built the first frame house ever erected in Fairfield, which was a building about 20 x 30 feet on the ground and a story and a half high. His wife was a very interesting and intelligent woman, and the union was blessed with four children. SHUFFLETON had now become the Postmaster of Fairfield, and while there in attendance upon the business of his office, a terrific thunder storm arose, his house was struck by lightning and his wife instantly killed….This tragedy blighted the life and further usefulness of this good man.”
