AN IOWA PIONEER WOMAN
Packwood, Iowa, May 13,1913Mrs. William Lock, who is 96 years old, was born March 23, 1817 at Orphet, Derman county, England. Her maiden name was Mary Boag. Her father was a Scotchman, her mother English. She united in marriage to William Lock, a neighbor, at Haswell, July 22, 1843. Three daughters and two sons blessed this union. A son and a daughter were born in England, the others being born here.
Having read much of the United States, the family determined to leave home and friends for the new country, and on May 25, 1845, they sailed from Liverpool and arrived at Philadelphia July 4, 1846. They located at Pittsburgh, Pa. and remained there until 1852, when they came to Iowa, and located on the farm where Mrs. Lock still lives with a daughter and two grandchildren. Mr. Lock passed away 12 years ago.
Mrs. Lock has always taken an active interest in the welfare of her neighbors and friends and is an active member of the M. E. Church. Her life has been pure and free from guile. She is a lifelong republican and believes that women should have the ballot. She was an avid reader until within the last two years, when her eyes failed so she could not read, but she says ' she reads in her mind what she had stored there in the past,' and takes great pleasure in quoting from the Bible, which to her is the book of books.
She bids fair to regain her usual health and is about much of the time as before her recent illness.
