1879 History of Jefferson County, Penn Township.
"SANFORD HUMPHREY, farmer, Sec. 11 (Penn Twp.) P.O. Pleasant Plain; born in this county in 1839. Married Miss Margaret F. Kendall; she was born in Miami County, Ohio; four children - Millie May; Alonzo; Almond L., Scott and Clarence E. His father, R. Humphrey, was a native of Stafford Co., Va.; married Miss P. Edwards, native of Frederick Co., Va., came to this county in 1839. Mrs. Humphrey's father, Joseph Kendall, was born in Ohio; he married Miss Sarah Ingle, moved to this county in 1855."
