In a letter dated May, 1, 1960, Mrs. DeForrest G. PARROTT, 3137 SW 12th St., Des Moines, Iowa, writes to Miss Iva SCHEFFEL of Fairfield:
"My maternal great-grandfather was Rev. Ebenezer RHODES, born 1780. He came from Champaign County, Ohio, to McLean County, Illinois, in 1823 and founded a settlement there which his eldest son, John H.S. RHODES, named Blooming Grove (later Bloomington)."
"Rev. Ebenezer and wife (Mary STARR RHODES) were parents of six sons and three daughters and of this numer three sons came to Iowa and died here.... the fourth son of Ebenezer RHODES was Aaron RHODES born 1808 in Ohio. On Dec. 4, 1828, Aaron was married in Tazewell Co., Ill., to Sarah "Sally" GLENN, born 1807 in Tenn. She and Aaron were parents of two babies still just babies when on June 22, 1833, young Aaron, age 25, was swimming in the RHODES mill pond and was drowned."
"The father, Rev. Ebenezer and his two eldest sons John H.S. RHODES and Samuel RHODES, built this mill some years earlier. The father was so heartbroken over Aaron's death he had the mill torn down and disposed of and he grieved long as he lived." (McLean Co., Illinois, Biographies)
"On Jan. 22, 1835, Sally was re-married, in McLean Co., Ill., to Daniel CARTER born 1805 and died May 4, 1891, Jefferson County, Iowa -- he and Sally are buried in Fell Cemetery near Libertyville. He married again and had many more children. Sally had four altogether, two by Aaron (both came to Iowa and one is buried at Osceola) and Sally had two by CARTER, then possibly due to hardships in Territory of Iowa she became ill and died 1841...."
