SAMPSON SMITH was a native of Virginia. His father, William SMITH, a farmer and hunter in Virginia, ran away from home to join the Continental Army. The original colonial ancestors belonged to the Tory party, Sampson SMITH’s grandfather, John SMITH, holding the position of high sheriff under the crown during the Revolutionary War.

Application for Pension for Service in the War of 1812. State of Iowa, County of Jefferson, ss:

“On this 1st day of June 1871 personally appeared before me .... Sampson SMITH, aged seventy-six years, a resident of Locust Grove Township, Jefferson County, Iowa....his wife’s name was ELIZABETH BONNER to whom he was married in Bath County, Virginia, on or about the 22nd of July 1816....he is the identical Sampson SMITH who was enrolled in Captain Edmund Sherman's Company of the 5th Regiment of Virginia Militia.... forces at Norfolk about 1st of September 1814 and was honorably discharged at Fort Nelson near Norfolk on the 15th of February 1815 or at the close of the war, that he served as 4th Sergeant in his company.... his post office is at Abingdon, Jefferson County, Iowa, and place of abode is Locust Grove Township in Jefferson County, Iowa.”
Dr. J. C. Ware and Jacob S. Stater certify.

Claim No. 9,977, Widow- Elizabeth (BONNER) SMITH .... Sampson SMITH volunteered at Warm Springs, Virginia..... Neither she nor her husband were ever married save to each other. Affidavits of Leander Powelson, Mary E. Powelson, Thomas Smith. Claimant’s address, Abingdon, Jefferson County, Iowa. Sampson SMITH drew pension under Certificate No. 11,982 up to his death. He obtained a land warrant, which he sold. Widow states that her husband was in Peter Smith's company in War of 1812, said Peter SMITH was a brother of said Sampson SMITH. Sampson SMITH died near Abingdon in Jefferson County, Iowa, at the same place where claimant now resides. (Declaration dated June 5, 1878.)
