Last night about half an hour after midnight occurred the death of Thomas Smith at his home 623 South Farmer Street. For almost thirty years Mr. Smith was street commissioner, and had led an active, busy life until three years ago, when he was sick for several months, and from that time until his death he has been a sufferer with a complication of troubles. Until last Friday he had not been confined to his bed, but was able to be around the house. At that time he was taken violently ill and was in a serious condition until the end came which relieved him from his sufferings.
Deceased was born in Barnsley, England, seventy-three years ago the 10th of last March and would soon have been seventy-three* years of age. He was married before leaving England to Miss Mary Jackson. They came to America in the year 1856 and settled in this city. Of this union there was one son, Frank Smith, who lives at Colfax.
The wife died in the year 1872. Two years later Mr. Smith married Miss Martha Hanson. Three children survive of this marriage, Minnie and Kate, who reside at home with the mother, and Mrs. William Gardner, who lives on a farm near Newton.
Mr. Smith was a strong man physically, and coming to this new country, as he did in such an early day, had the experiences of frontier life.
The funeral will be held from the Methodist Church Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock, Rev. O. S. Baker officiating. ~ The Newton Daily News, Tuesday, February 26, 1907, Page 1, Column 3
