KILLED BY LIGHTNING. - Last Thursday afternoon [June 15th] at a little past 6 o'clock, Mr. Fred Veat (sic-Vieth), living in Mariposa township, was instantly killed by lightning. In the forenoon he and his wife had been to Kellogg, where he had made final setlements with quite a number of merchants, and his friends now think that he had a premonition of what was about to happen [to] him. He had got home and gone to attend to some farm work, when a severe storm came up. His wife saw him coming home, and near the barn, when rain began to fall. As he did not come into the house, she thought he had sought shelter in the barn. After the storm was over, and he did not come into the house, she went out and found him dead about three rods distant from the barn. The electrical field had evidently struck him on top of his head, (which was all covered, when found, with pimples), and passed through his body and out through his shoes, as the latter, while not torn from his feet, were ripped and split in several places. He was a worthy, hard working young man highly respected and honored by those who knew him, - had been married about a year, and leaves a wife and a young babe. ~ The Newton Journal, Wednesday, June 21, 1893.
