Bert H. Plate

Funeral services for Bert H. Plate, 78, of 1114 N. 4th Ave. W., a longtime resident of Jasper County, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 21, at the United Presbyterian Church.

The Rev. Scott Coulter, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home after 1 p.m. today. Visitation with the family will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

He died at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines following a heart attack Thursday morning.

Memorials to the United Presbyterian Church or to a fund in his name will be accepted.

Survivors are his wife, Tena; a son, Darold E. of Fairfax, Va.; three daughters, Mary Jean (Mrs. Don) Meulbroek of Homewood, Ill., Arlene (Mrs. Marvin) Thomas of Newton and Carol J. Werdell of Novi, Mich.; and eight grandchildren.

Also surviving are two brothers, Henry of Ventura, Calif., and Harold of Iowa City; two sisters, Cora (Mrs. John) Smit of Prairie City and Thelma (Mrs. Harry) Van Zee of Prairie City; two step-brothers, Frederick Mc Cormick of Minneapolis, Minn., and Raymond Mc Cormick of Iowa City; two step-sisters, Sarah (Mrs. Albert) Lourens of Mitchellville and Florence (Mrs. Elmer) Brown of Iowa City.

He was preceded in death by his mother in 1934, his father in 1963, his step-mother, Mamie Plate in 1978, and a son, Lawrence, in December, 1965.

Mr. Plate, an employee of the Maytag Co. for 29 years, retired in 1974.

He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, United Auto Workers, Local 997, Retirees Union, Wittemberg Grange and Jasper County Senior Citizens.

The son of Herman and Lena Hugen Plate, he was born April 20, 1911 near Oskaloosa and attended Jasper County schools.

He was married to Lena Margaret Ryerkerk June 14, 1935 in the Ryerkerk family home near Prairie City.

Mr. Plate farmed in the Prairie City area until moving to Newton in 1941. In 1947 he moved north of Newton where he farmed until moving back to Newton Sept. 17.
