David Smith
June 7, 1982 - March 12, 2026

David very unexpectedly died at home from an undiagnosed heart condition. He was 43 years old.

He was born in Walnut Creek, California, the youngest of three children. The family moved to Southern California for a few years, then to Seoul, South Korea, for two years, and later to Oregon, where they lived for 29 years before David came to Iowa with his older brother.

David had a great work ethic; he loved his work at Walmart and Hy-Vee and made many lasting friendships. From his time in the Job Corps, he learned to cook and would make some awesome dishes. His time at home was spent cooking, playing on his PlayStation 5 and time with the dog, Gemma. Boy, did he love that dog—it was very obvious that he was her person.

David is survived by his mother, Claudia Peterson; brother, Jeremy Smith; sister, Melissa Smith; nieces Alayna and Serenity; great nephew Amos; great nieces Lucy, Braelyn and Aaliyah; aunt and uncle, Bruce and Patty; and many cousins.

David is already sorely missed and will forever be in our hearts.

A memorial service for David will be held at Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton, Iowa on Friday, April 3, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. The family will greet guests for a time of visitation one hour prior to the service, starting at 11:00 a.m. There will be a luncheon in the Pence-Reese Tribute Center following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association, or Autism Speaks.
