James Gardner, 83, of Newton died Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2005, at his home.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Dr. Marvin Potter of Newton officiating.

Friends may call from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton. Memorials may be left at the funeral home.

The son of James and Leona (Munger) Gardner Sr., he was born April 13, 1922, in Newton. He was a lifelong resident of Newton. On July 5, 1944, he married Dorothy I. Birkenholtz in Corpus Christi, Texas. He served in the U.S. Navy Air Corps during World War II.

He was a farmer and a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Elks in Newton. He also was a member of Palo Alto Grange, American Legion Post 363 of Monroe and past master of the Fairview Lodge No. 194 AF/AM of Monroe.

Mr. Gardner enjoyed all outdoor sports, especially playing golf. He was a Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed going to his grandchildren's sporting events.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Patricia Ann (Charles) Butcher of Barnum, Minn., and Barb (Dan) Whalen of Naperville, Ill.; two sons, J.D. Gardner of Manalapan, N.J., and Denny (Vicki) Gardner of Newton; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Dale (Peggy) Gardner of Newton; two sisters, Dorothy Richards of Kellogg and Helen (Merle) Kreager of Newton; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
