James E. Ferguson Sr., 74, of Newton died Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2005, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Merle Smith, chaplain of Skiff Medical Center, and the Rev. Gary Marzolf of First United Methodist Church in Newton officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.
Friends may call after 5 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, where the family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials to the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center or to the Izaak Walton Kitchen Fund may be left at the funeral home.
The son of Harry G. and Olive C. (Ray) Ferguson, he was born Dec. 6, 1930, in Newton. He graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1949 and served as a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. On Feb. 14, 1960, he married K. Sheryl Koder in Prairie City. He was a truck driver for Firestone and retired in 1994. He also was a school bus driver for Newton Community School District and retired in March.
Mr. Ferguson was a member of Teamsters Union No. 147, Emerson Hough Chapter of the Izaak Walton League and Big Brothers Big Sisters. He was an avid Chicago Cubs, Chicago Bears, Iowa Hawkeyes and Newton Cardinals fan. He enjoyed fishing and being kitchen manager of the Izaak Walton League.
Survivors include his wife; a son, James E. Jr. (Jeannie) of Newton; three daughters, Deborah (Brent) Bagnall of Newton, Kristy (Andrew) Warren of Norwalk and Janet (Bob) Dooley of Des Moines; 10 grandchildren; a brother, Jack (Irene) Ferguson of Newton; a sister, Barbara (Dyer) Hammer of Newton; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, William, Eugene, Kenneth and Larry; and two nephews.
