August 17, 1932 ~ December 16, 2024 (age 92)

Dale William Gardner, 92, of Newton died on Monday, December 16, 2024, at MercyOne Newton Medical Center. The family will greet friends with a coffeetime at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory from 1-3 p.m., Friday, December 20, 2024. Memorials to Wesley Life Hospice or the Salvation Army may be left at the funeral home.

Dale, the son of James and Leona (Munger) Gardner, Sr., was born on August 17, 1932, in Newton. He was a graduate of Newton High School in 1950. Dale served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On February 21, 1953, Dale was united in marriage with Peggy Hindman at the First Presbyterian Church in Newton. Dale farmed south of Newton before going to work at the Maytag Company as a Machine Operator in 1960. After 33 years of service, he retired in 1993 as a manager in the Computer Department. After retirement, Dale liked going to monthly breakfast with other Maytag retirees.

Dale was a 50-year member of the Elks Lodge #1270, a member of the Masonic Lodge #59 AF & AM, and a member of the American Legion Post 111. He was honored to be a participant on a Jasper County Freedom Flight. Dale was also a past member of the Maytag Management Club and had served as a County Representative for Newton Planning and Zoning. In the late 1960’s, Dale enjoyed coaching Little League Baseball. He was also a lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeyes; attending many Hawkeye Bowl Games. Dale enjoyed planting a garden, and volunteering at Skiff Hospital and through RSVP.

Dale was a devoted husband, of over 60 years; dad; and grandpa. He is survived by his daughter, Rhonda (Randy) Bauer of Newton; sons, Steve Gardner (Tina Landgrebe) of Newton and Douglas (Rose) Gardner of Ankeny; grandchildren, Jonathan (Amy) Gardner, Jennifer Gardner, Hope Bauer, Heather Mueller, and Timmy Gardner; his many great-grandchildren; and his special companion, Veralea Buchanan. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Peggy; a son, Mark Gardner; and his siblings, James Gardner, Dorothy Richards, and Helen Kreager.
