Shirley Marlene (Waits) Modlin, 88, of Newton died on Monday, November 11, 2024, at Urbandale Healthcare. A celebration of life visitation and meal will be held from 11-1 p.m., Saturday, November 30, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorials to Wesley Life Hospice may be left at the funeral home.

Shirley, the daughter of Leo and Helen (Rexroat) Waits, was born on November 6, 1936. She grew up in Pella and graduated from Pella High School in 1955. On June 6, 1955, Shirley was united in marriage with Lois Dale “L.D.” Modlin in Newton. They made their home in Otley for a short time before moving to Jasper County, living most of their married lives between Newton and Kellogg. When her children were young, Shirley worked as a waitress at the Maytag Hotel. She then worked in accounting at Montgomery Wards in Newton. Later she would work and retire from Security Thrift Loans located first in Newton and then in Des Moines. L.D. ad Shirley enjoyed bowling leagues, square dancing, and line dancing.

Shirley had many interests including shopping, going to get coffee, going to Pella to the bakery, cooking, and baking. She loved a good margarita and cheering for the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs, NASCAR, and the Green Bay Packers. Shirley always kept a very organized and immaculate house and would never let anyone leave without making sure they were fed. Her greatest love was her family and she faithfully attended her children’s and grandchildren’s events and made sure every holiday was celebrated to the fullest.

Shirley is survived by her sons, Galen (Lori) Modlin of Ankeny and Kevin (Bonnie) Modlin of South Carolina; grandchildren, Stephanie (Cody) Olson, Alex (Chelsie) Modlin, Josi Arguello, Jared (Megan) Modlin, Joseph Brock, Ragan (Mallory) Brock, and Will Brock; great-grandchildren, Brayden, Kinsley, Kamden, Rylan, Jagger, Jersey, Ty, Kamryn (Reece), Zayvier, Emersyn, Jackson, and Ronin; her siblings, Phyllis Bittner, Sharon (Gene) Newman, Dennis (Cheryl) Waits, Ron (Joan) Waits, Rick (Cindy) Waits, and Phillip Waits; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, L.D. “Bo” Modlin; daughter, Kristi Brock; sister, Roberta Landgrebe and a brother, Jackie Waits, at a young age.
