Dennis Craig Johnson
March 12, 1948 ~ November 10, 2024 (age 76)Dennis Craig Johnson, 76, of Newton died on Sunday, November 10, 2024, at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center. A visitation will be held from 10-12 p.m., Monday, November 18, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. The visitation will be followed by a service at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory Memorials to the American Diabetes Association may be left at the funeral home.
Dennis, the son of Charles and Letha (Slycord) Johnson, was born on March 12, 1948, in Waynesville, Missouri. Growing up Dennis lived in many places before moving to Central Iowa and attending Grinnell High School. After high school, Dennis stayed in the area moving to Newton in the mid 1960’s. He later became a fixture of Lambs Grove in the 1970’s. Dennis had a 40-year career as a Postal Clerk, first in Newton and later in Des Moines, retiring in 2009. After that, he delivered flowers for Hy-Vee until 2020.
On December 23, 1989, Dennis was united in marriage with Roberta Gillman at the Newton Baptist Temple, where they are members and took care of the lawn for over 20 years. Dennis also was a member of the American Postal Workers Union (APWU). Dennis was an avid Iowa Hawkeye sports fan. He enjoyed working in his yard, watching western movies and listening to Elvis Presley. He also had a love for all things John Deere – researching the latest models, tinkering on his, and not only mowing his own yard but also most of his Lambs Grove neighborhood.
Dennis is survived by his wife, Roberta Johnson of Lambs Grove; children, Adam Johnson of Las Vegas, Wendy Woody of Grimes, Jill (Eric) Howe of Fort Mill, South Carolina, Mary (Dane) Dafflitto of Newton; and Dan Kern of Kalona; his grandchildren, Brennon Woody, Kaden Woody, Miranda Howe, Adrienne (Kylie) Thomas, Tyler (Alexis) Dafflitto, Jerica Dafflitto, Ashley (Edward) Jernigan, and Alyssa Kern; great-grandchildren, Matthew and Greyson, with two more on the way; his siblings, Mary Cocking, David Johnson, and Steve Johnson; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Johnson; mother, Letha Foreman; and siblings, Candace O’Brien, Charles Johnson, Jr., and Kent Johnson.
