November 16, 1930 ~ September 30, 2024 (age 93)

Donald Garhart Meier, 93, of Newton died on Monday, September 30, 2024, at Greenfield Manor in Greenfield. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 14, 2024, at Newton Union Cemetery. The family will greet friends after the service until 1:30 p.m., with a lunch at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorials in Don’s name may be left at the funeral home (checks payable to Dennis Meier).

Don, the son of George and Helen (Meyer) Meier, was born on November 16, 1930 in Sumner, Iowa. He grew up and graduated from high school in Sumner. Don served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On April 10, 1955, Don was united in marriage with Grace Warnke in Sumner. Don began his 32-year career for the telephone company in Sumner before moving to Madrid and later to Greenfield in the mid 1960’s. Around 1980, he moved to the telephone company’s home office in Newton where he would later retire. After retirement, Don worked as a custodian for the Newton Community Schools. Don was a member of the VFW and the Madrid Lion’s Club. He enjoyed being outdoors; fishing, camping, hunting, and golfing. He and Grace also liked playing cards with family and friends.

Don is survived by his sons, Dennis (Sheila) Meier of Greenfield and David (Susan) Meier of Waterloo; six grandchildren, Tracy (Ken) Murphy of Van Meter, Suzanne (Kelly) O’Riley of Ankeny, Hesper (Brian) Jameson of Greenfield, Gentri Meier of Atlantic, Samantha (Kevin) Shildneck of Charleston, South Carolina, and Daniel Meier of Des Moines; his five great-grandchildren, Kase, Kilian, Cormick, Akayla, and Eleni; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Grace in 1997; son, Gary in 2022; and his siblings, Harry Meier, Mildred Smidt, Berdina Schellhorn, and Viola Lentzkow.
