Sandra Sue (Umbarger) Herwehe
October 24, 1946 ~ May 16, 2024 (age 77)

Sandra Sue Herwehe passed away on Thursday, May 16, 2024 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in Sandra’s name (checks payable to Cheryl Gerlach) which may be left at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.

Sandra was born on October 25, 1946 to Bascum and Jule (Boyer) Umbarger in Newton, Iowa. She was a lifelong resident of Newton and graduated from Newton High School in the class of 1964. After, she went on to also graduate from the Iowa School of Beauty. Professionally, Sandra worked as a flagger for Manatts and as a Walmart door greeter for 15 years before retiring. Outside of work, she was a proud housewife who enjoyed raising her children and later seeing her grandkids. Sandra also enjoyed bird watching, gardening, and watching the Knoxville sprint car races with her family.

The special people and pets in Sandra’s life were especially meaningful to her. Her and her grandson Atley loved doing puzzles together and enjoyed many sleep overs. Her dog, Alvin, who she referred to as ‘her baby’ and ‘her boy’ went for many walks and car rides together. And her newest addition to the family, her great-grandson, Knox, had a special bond and she called him her ‘sweet boy’ and ‘the light of her life’.

Sandra is survived by her daughters, Cheryl (Franklin) Gerlach, Melinda (Travis) Locklear, and Cindy Rudkin; grandchildren, Josh (Alyson) Gerlach, Tabitha Williams, Holly Winston, Morgan (Carson) Robson, Blake (Dezirae) Robson, Atley Rudkin, Kale Locklear, Ava Locklear, and Trey Locklear; great-grandson, Knox; siblings, Mike (Jan) Umbarger, Joyce (Tom) Tripp, and Bill (Kelly) Umbarger; special friends, Lisa Painter and Bonnie Mullen; father of her children, Jack Herwehe; and her dog, Alvin. She was preceded in death by her parents.
