Nancy Lee Fitzpatrick, 82, of Lynnville passed away Sunday, Oct. 28, 2018, after suffering a heart attack on Friday. She had just finished one of her many horse rides that she so enjoyed doing, and could not have passed on in a more meaningful way.
Nancy Lee Halverson, the daughter of Bentley Alvin and Helen Susie (Mauser) Halverson, was born Sept. 10, 1936, at Orchard. She was raised on a farm near McIntire. She attended David Country School and then high school at Riceville. She attended University of Northern Iowa (née Iowa State Teachers College) for two years and then graduated from Drake University with a degree in elementary education. She married Dr. Terry E. Fitzpatrick on Dec. 22, 1957, in Osage.
She taught school for one year at Riceville, two years at Collins, and 35 and a half years at Lynnville - Sully. Summers were spent going to classes and riding horses in her spare time. She loved helping out on the farms and working to restore one farm to native prairie grasses. She also helped get their South Devon cattle ready for the Iowa State Fair.
The time she spent with her children and grandchildren was special to her. She loved going on trail rides to Missouri and Kansas and riding with friends around Lynnville. She enjoyed teaching young students how to ride horses.
Nancy was a woman of strong faith and a devoted member of Grace Lutheran Church in Oskaloosa.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband Terry; and sister-in-law Linda Halverson. Survivors include her son, Shawn (Jenny) Fitzpatrick of Solon and their sons, Connor and Cameron; her son, Brian (Sherry) Fitzpatrick of Oskaloosa and their children, Kevin and Kimmy, Trevor and Cassi, Annie, and Maggie; sisters, Bonnie (Max) Wagner of Eagan, MN, and Kathy (Jim) Bartels of Chatfield, MN; brother, Jim Halverson of Montrose; and many friends of all ages.
Nancy was a proponent of education and wanted her body to be donated for science and medical studies at Des Moines University upon her passing. A visitation will be held 3-6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 1, in the basement of the 1st State Bank in Lynnville. A graveside ceremony will be held with family at a later date. Donations may be made to the Lynnville Library, the Lynnville Historical Society, or the Lynnville-Sully Community Education Foundation.
