Randall J. Paul, 31, of Oskaloosa and formerly of Grinnell, died Friday afternoon, May 12, 2017, due to a traffic accident south of Grinnell. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 19, at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. John Epperson, Grinnell Regional Hospice Chaplain, officiating. Pallbearers will be Tim Brown, Shane Dittmer, Anthony Engelbarts, Derek Fisk, Tony Lang, Daniel McPherren, Scott Shook, and Mike Sokol. Burial will be in the Friends Cemetery near Lynnville. Visitation will be held from 2-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the family present from 5-7 p.m.
Memorials may be directed to the Randall J. Paul Memorial Fund and mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, IA 50112.
Randall was born Feb. 27, 1986, in Grinnell, the son of Jeffrey James and Pamela Kay Berry Paul. He was raised in the country near Grinnell and was a 2005 graduate of Grinnell High School. While in high school, he played the trumpet in band and jazz band. He was active with the Boy Scouts and was employed at Hy-Vee and KFC. He attended Lynnville Friends Church and later the Church of God in Grinnell. He always looked forward to attending Vacation Bible School.
Following high school, he attended Job Core in Dennison and then received additional training in Minneapolis. He was employed at Safeway in Yakima, WA, and then with Werner Trucking in Phoenix, AZ, until 2011. He returned to the Grinnell area and worked for Jeld-Wen, Montezuma Manufacturing, and most recently, Brownells Inc. He knew the value of hard work!
Randall was considered a “country boy” during his childhood and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and collecting and studying bugs. He loved family trips throughout the Midwest, attending dog shows and camping. He held a passion for video games and enjoyed cooking, particularly making chili. Randall was a good person and a loyal friend to many. He held a fun sense of humor and enjoyed making others laugh.
He is survived by his parents, Jeff and Pam Paul of Grinnell; one sister, Mandy (Tony) Lang of Deep River; his grandmother, Barb Paul of Grinnell; his niece and nephew, Kaylin and Gage Lang; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Gene and Dorothy Berry and Robert Paul; his uncle, Verl Shook; and a cousin, Thomas A. Brown.
