James Thornton Dunlap
September 30, 1949 ~ May 1, 2024 (age 74)

James “Jim” Thornton Dunlap II, 74, of Newton, formerly of Decatur Island, WA, died Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at his residence. Private family services will be held in Washington state at a later date. Memorials in Jim’s name (checks payable to James A. Dunlap) may be left at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton.

Jim, the son of James Thornton and Beverly (Davis) Dunlap, was born on September 30, 1949, in Long Beach, CA. He earned a bachelor’s degree in History and Arts with a minor in Middle Eastern studies from BYU. He was also a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Jim was an artist in many different mediums throughout his life and was known as a ‘chameleon’ by his family. One day he would be a cowboy and the next a sailor or surfer. Though he was a nomad at heart, he spent 30 years on Decatur Island in Washington State where he was able to be both sailor and cowboy. He was enthusiastic and passionate about everything and was ‘all in’ in life. He enjoyed carpentry and had an affinity for animals but most of all he loved his children, grandchildren, and the Lord.

Jim is survived by his children, Seth (Jenn Riggs) Dunlap, Elaine (Ryan) Redmond, James A. (Jacinda) Dunlap, Celeste Dunlap, Colleen (Jorgen Otterholt) Dunlap, Megen Dunlap, Shannon (Thomas St Louis) Dunlap; grandchildren, Griffen, Tavia, Thora, Ammon, Bjorn, Todd, Tyler, Dalton, Tess, Kora, Lyra, Rose, Rowan, Byronwyn, Gwenna, Moira, Merrick, Lachlan, and Keely; 4 great-grandchildren; siblings, Jill (Dan) Eldredge and Jeffrey (Layne Rackley) Dunlap; mother of his children, Kathy Dunlap; daughter-in-law, Lisa Dunlap; brother-in-law, Jack Miles; sister-in-law, Catalina Leavitt; as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents; 1st wife, Linda (Miller) Dunlap; children, Aaron and Ammon Dunlap; and siblings, Donnee Miles and Timothy Dunlap.
