COUNCIL BLUFFS - Antonia "Nettie" Bale, 86, of Council Bluffs, formerly of Colfax, died Monday, March 10, at Risen Son Christian Village in Council Bluffs.

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Colfax with Father Phil Cardenzana officiating. Burial will at the Colfax Cemetery. Walters Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax is handling arrangements.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church where the family will greet friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. A Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Memorials may be donated to Risen Son Christian Village or the National Alzheimer Association.

The daughter of Jacob P. and Antonia D. (Dolinsek) Stremfel, she was born May 22, 1916, in Seevers. She graduated from Colfax High School in 1933 and went on to receive her teaching certificate from Drake University. On July 26, 1945, she married Earl Bale in Colfax. Mrs. Bale taught school for many years. Following her retirement in the late 1970s, she became city clerk for several years. She also served on the city council for a term and as the mayor of Colfax for two terms.

She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, where she was active with the Altar & Rosary Society. She also was active with the Democratic Party and enjoyed working puzzles, crocheting, camping and the Chicago Cubs. She lived in Colfax until she moved to Council Bluffs in 1999.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Harry Gregg of Glenwood; a son and daughter-in-law, Phil Bale and Sally Bale of Grimes; a grandson; two great-granddaughters; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Mary and Nick Leydens of Pella, Genevieve Crawford of De Motte, Ind., and Elizabeth Smith of Buffalo Center; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a grandson, two sisters and four brothers.
