Nancy Winnifred Barwegen, 61, of Newton died on Sunday, December 10, 2023, at her residence. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 8, 2023, at the Newton Church of the Way. The family will greet friends from 4-6 p.m., Sunday, January 7, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Newton Christian School may be left at the funeral home or the church the day of the service.

Nancy, the daughter of John and Petronella (Dekker) Barwegen, was born on February 9, 1962, in Newton. She was a lifelong resident of Newton. Growing up she attended Newton Christian School and later graduated from Newton High School in the Class of 1980. Nancy worked at the Maytag Company for 16 years as a tool room secretary. She later worked for TPI, Trinity Towers, Underwriter Laboratories, Grinnell College, and most recently at Optimae as an Administrative Assistant. Nancy dedicated her life to Jesus Christ. She was an active member of the Newton Church of the Way, where she had been running the sound booth. She also was a longtime supporter and volunteer at the Newton Christian School.

Nancy was a talented artist and loved to recycle items to make them into art pieces. She also was a perfectionist and always liked to make her projects “just right”. Nancy could always create something out of nothing. Nancy was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.

Nancy is survived by her son, Tim Barwegen of Newton; grandson, T.J. (Jennelyn) Barwegen of Newton; great-granddaughter, Yui Nancy Barwegen; her sister, Winnifred “Winnie” Nancy Rye of Des Moines; nieces, Attalie Rye and Shaeyla Rye (Michael White); great-nieces, Aria and Neveah White; and her cousin, Herb Randall (Sherree) Bergstom of Ankeny. She is preceded in death by her parents and her brother-in-law, Mike Rye.
