Roger Hamersley Obituary
A Celebration of Life will be held from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, November 21, 2023, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton, with a time of sharing memories beginning at 6:30 p.m. Memorials in Roger’s name (please make checks payable to Mari Hamersley) can be left at the funeral home.

Roger, the son of Merle and Betty (Pilcher) Hamersley, was born June 13, 1952, in Ottumwa. He grew up between Ottumwa and Kennewick, Washington until his family moved to Newton in 1969, when Roger was a junior in high school. Roger graduated from Newton High School in 1971. He later received a degree in electronics from the National Education Center in Des Moines. Roger was united in marriage with Mari Sue Gooding on April 30, 1976, at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Newton. He had worked at Newton Concrete and Asphalt and later worked at Forbes Office Solutions doing machine repairs. Roger most recently had been employed at Des Moines Asphalt for 25 years doing plant maintenance.

Roger’s passion in life was RC cars. From the time he discovered them at age 12, he built and collected numerous cars. He also maintained an RC track at Hobby Haven in Des Moines, where he organized and ran several races through the years. Roger was a jack of all trades and was able to fix anything. He enjoyed bluegrass music, cooking, and Friday night dates for dinner and a movie. He was always up for a road trip and doted on the family’s pets over the years. Roger was a hard worker and a loyal friend, always willing to lend a hand to anyone he knew. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who loved life.

Roger is survived by his wife, Mari Hamersley of Newton; his daughter, Kira Shepherd of Newton; granddaughter, Delaney Shepherd of Newton; mother-in-law, Ramona Osborn of Newton; his best friend since age 17, Ed Harl and his sons, Vincent and Matt Harl; and A.J. Failor, who was like a son to Roger. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Steve Hamersley.

The family would like to thank all the doctors who have cared for Roger throughout the years.
